Bourton-on-the-Water Community Speedwatch Initiative
Bourton-on-the-Water Parish Council
What is Community Speedwatch?
Schemes came from an idea to involve local residents in speed reduction activity in North Cotswold Villages and Towns.
It is a speed monitoring programme, carried out by trained volunteers, with follow up work on education and enforcement by Gloucestershire Constabulary and The CDC.
Letters are sent to registered keepers of offending vehicles, asking for their assistance in keeping down speeds in the community. Persistent offenders are targeted for Police enforcement.
How long has it been operating in Bourton-on-the-Water?
The Team has just finished its 3rd season of activity. From March to October 2015 a total of 51 roadside sessions took place over 58 hours.
What results have been recorded?
- More than 2200 vehicles were travelling in excess of 30 mph.
- Of these, 27% were in excess of 35 mph.
- An incredible 133 motorists (6%) were recorded at 40+ mph.
- Speeds of up to 53 mph have regularly been seen.
What happens next?
The Team works closely with the Police to ensure the Speedwatch initiative works. Letters have been sent to registered keepers of vehicles exceeding the 30 mph Village speed limit.
Some vehicles have been recorded 2, 3 and 4 times. We have been told that the Police have visited persistent offenders to remind them of their need to keep to the speed limit.
The Team will continue to work with the authorities to make Village roads a safe place in which to travel.
How can you help?
- Please respect the speed limit in the Village and obey the law.
We are not a group of vigilantes. Our objective is to educate drivers that excessive speed causes accidents.
Your continued support for the scheme would be appreciated.
